Nupak Soup Mix Ham Stock Soup

ABE0DAB8-FAD9-4F24-B3F7-799908885CFENupak soup mix was something I use to buy all the time, but I haven’t been able to get it for over 35 year. There are lots of dried bean mixes that you can buy but Nupak mix is a little different. The ones I have been finding in the stores have had five or six different beans and peas, Nupak has ten. It has different kinds of beans, peas, lentils, and even 2 kinds of barley. The mixture they have just seems to be made to use with ham stock. I had forgotten one thing that I should of remembered, you should soak it over night, I’ll blame it on the 35 year absence from my cupboard. Not a big deal because you just have to boil it longer. When I was able to get it all the time I used it in beef soup, chicken soup, and turkey soup it is that versatile a product. I found my favourite was to make a ham soup with it. Once you have the stock all soups are simple to make, this one is also.

3 litres ham stock

1 and 1/2 cups of soup mix

1 onion diced

1 rib celery chopped

1 carrot chopped

1 and 1/2 teaspoons salt

1 teaspoon pepper

3 cups of ham

Add the soup mix to the stock, bring to a boil, reduce heat to a gentle boil and cook for 1 hour (30 minutes if you do the smart thing and read the package directions, which I didn’t). Add the carrots, celery, onion, and ham, cook for 30 minutes. Works well with cheese biscuits but anything is good. Will keep for 3 or 4 days in the fridge.

I thought of the mixed bean packet but eliminated it because it was ‘split peas’. 🙂

I think the Bulk Barn has bins of bean mixtures.

This mix does look unique. Where can I find it?

I found nupak at no frills, next to Beans and Lentils. 1lb pack cost 99c. I prefer this one over others.

Peut-on faire cette soupe dans un Instant pot et le temps de cuisson?

This looks like a hearty, delicious, fall soup. Thank you for sharing!

  6. Please help I have boiled this NuPak soup mix like it says on back of package for 60 minutes and simmered for several hours as several of the beans were still to hard to eat. I even tried the soak them overnight but still some hard beans usually the yellow whole ones. Do you boil the beans then soak overnight? Will cooking them in a crockpot help? I love the bean mix btu not the hard ones.

    • I found that if I soak them overnight with a tablespoon of vinegar added to the water it helps. The yellow beans will still be firm but not hard. Hope that helps and if I can help with anything else please ask

No cooking instructions on nupak soup mix bag – how does one cook this stuff?
    Thank you.

    • Basically you cook it for about an hour, but that depends on how hot your cooking it at. What I do is keep it on a gentle boil in the stock and check the yellow peas. When they are just about soft I add the vegetables and the ham and cook until the vegetables are done.
